Adventures in Voluntourism, (AIV) has designed the perfect itinerary to introduce travelers to Colombia’s culture through a visit to its beautiful Caribbean coastal city, Cartagena. This group travel trip is a way to learn about Colombia’s history, while helping to preserve the environment through an exploration of its old city. Cartagena’s main attractions are located in the old city, which is known, as it’s interior walled town. Here consists of two historical districts, San Diego and El Centro. When you travel to these areas you will feel as if you are going back in time, as you observe colonial architecture, and wander by monasteries, churches, breathtaking palaces and mansions.
The most famous historical site is the Castle or Fortress of San Felipe de Barajas, also known as Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. This is a well-known military fortress, and an important structure, built for the purpose of defense by the Spanish. It has withstood English and French attacks and has become a must visit tourist site.
Another must-see historical site is a 17th century monastery, called the Covent of the Stern, or the Convento de la Popa. This is located at the top, highest point, of Mount Popa. It is the top-place to get an outstanding view of the city and can also be seen from just about anywhere in Cartagena.
